Welcome!

My name is Alexa Fernando. I am a graduate student at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa where I study electrical engineering with a focus in systems and data science and a concentration in energy. My passion is to use electrical engineering to help solve some of the most critical problems in the world.

About Me.

Growing up in Hawaii, I have understood the importance of being a good steward of the environment. My passion for STEM and determination to help fight climate change led me to pursue a degree at the University of Hawaii in electrical engineering systems with a concentration in energy. Through my studies and research in university and work experience at the STEM Pre-Academy and WSP, I continually refine my engineering skills. Putting these skills to use while I worked as a lab manager for the Renewable Energy Design lab in my junior year was a rewarding experience. At the RED lab, I managed other engineering students as we worked on a smart hydroponics system that STEM Pre-Academy implemented to teach engineering and science to students at Washington Middle School. Currently, I am a Graduate Research Assistant in the PakaLi Labs at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), where my research focuses on developing methods to improve the accuracy of online lithium-ion battery diagnosis and prognosis. My work in these organizations has allowed me to use my engineering skills and fuels my passion for making a difference in the fight against climate change and inspiring other young women to pursue careers in STEM.
